Review: Mountain Hardwear Solitude [ 1-man, 3-season tent ]

Product Description
This feather-light shelter is specifically designed for solo trips. Far less claustrophobic than your standard bivy sack, the Solitude is a hoop-supported structure that maximizes living space while weighing in at under three pounds. The unique, asymmetric floor plan allows this sliver-of-a-tent to still have an ample door. The fly is naturally hydrophobic and UV-resistant ripstop polyester. It doesn't stretch like nylon when wet, so your original pitch stays true, even in the rain. The three-point stake-out makes for an easy set up (non-free-standing). Flo-thru ventilation is accomplished with two mesh intake vents and two canopy vents.

Summary:
The Solitude is very easy to pitch as long as you are able to stake it out. I've never set it up on rocks but would imagine it is possible, albeit a bit more difficult.

Size-wise, I think it's perfect. I'm 5-10 and have plenty of room inside. This tent is obviously not marketed as a bivy shelter and it should not be. IMHO, I'd much rather carry this 3lb. tent and know I'll be confortable rather than a bivy sack.

The vestibule is small, but adequate for boots and maybe a small stove setup. The nice thing about it is that you can adjust the fly openings while you are laying down by just unzipping the mesh and sticking your arm out. Very nice feature to have.

At $190, the tent is pricey, but well worth it down to the last stitch. MH makes hardcore gear that is built to last and will not fail you. This ain't no Eureka (trust me, I have two Eurekas)!

If you know you will really use this tent, I would definitely reccommend it. For occassional use, you might be able to save a few bucks with another brand.

Customer Service:
None. I've heard MH is really good.

Summary:
A great one man tent. MH builds the toughest tents out there. Very economical, space and weight wise. I'm 6'2" and fit perfectly, but there's not a ton of room leftover. The vestibule is kinda small, enough room for boots. Even though its free standing, it's always very taut when pitched. I especially like the small pole sections. ANother nice featue is the polyester rain fly, this doesn't stretch when wet like nylon and dries in a flash. Everything is top notch, highly recommend it. My only complaint is that it could be a little taller so my head wouldn't hit the top when I sit up.

Summary:
The Solitude is a very sturdy one man tent. It has survived a horrible thunder storm and kept the rain out very well. I have used this tent a lot and have few complaints. The only problem that I have found is that if you are over 6' tall. With the fly on and the tent zipped up tight, I have noticed some condensation at the foot area. That problem does not exist if the fly is zipped open.

Summary:
Haven't had a chance to put this tent through the test yet but overall impression is well built and stable. Compared to other single person tents, it is slightly heavier and costs more but has features not found in the others....a window, extra guy points, and diagonal door for easy entry and a green polyester fly. I'm a little leary about the exposed zipper on the fly but it does have a flap underneath to direct any leakage.
