Review: Mountain Hardwear Lightwedge 2 [ 2-man, 3 season Tent ]

Product Description

Simple, lightweight, and spacious, our Light Wedge 2 & 3 make bringing a tent along a luxury you can always afford. The 2-pole design offers plenty of room and provides solid shelter, yet only takes up a corner of your pack. Both the two-person Light Wedge 2 and three-person Light Wedge 3 feature large mesh doors, two sky vents, and a rear window for excellent Flo-Thru ventilation. The vestibule (with UVX window) is perfect for stashing gear and protects the entry in heavy weather. The floor and fly are both fully taped. A Tension Shelf adds strength to the structure and overhead storage as well. It also supports an ingenious brow pole that greatly increases vestibule volume.

Summary:
One of the best two man tents that I could find for the space to weight ratio. This tent held up very well to large gusts (30-40MPH) considering it is only a 2 pole + brow pole design. The tent also vents very well and condensation was not a problem. The only thing I did not like about the tent is that the door is all mesh and the vestibule serve as the "hard" door. During the wind, dust blows up under the vestibule and the finer particles get in the tent covering your bag, etc with a fine powder.

Summary:
This is my first tent purchase. I also searched the web and followed advice of the store salesman. I took this tent on a 2 week motorcycle tour. It set up and broke down very nicely. It withstood wind and rain and remained dry. It provided ventilation when needed by staking out the fly. I liked the storage areas, loops, pockets, and large vestibule.

I used the fly and footprint everytime I set the tent up. I had no condensation at all. On warm days I left the fly door open with the rear section of the fly staked out. I was careful to set up so the breeze could enter the front door and was very comfortable. On colder days in the Black Hills at altitude, I shut the fly door except for a small portion at the top and experienced no condensation.

The tent is rated as two person, 3 season. I had tons of room for myself and much more gear than a hiker/backpacker would carry. Like rainsuits, saddlebags, etc. If you are over 6' 3" or so, this tent not be long enough for you. It was just about right for me and I'm 6' 1". Two people will be snug in this tent but there is enough room.

I think Mountain Hardware makes excellent stuff. I plan to use the tent for bicycle touring and backpacking. The cost is a little higher than similiar models from other manufacturers. However if the tent holds up like it should, it is still an excellent value. I got a break on the price by buying a sleeping bag, tent, and sleeping pad package. They even threw in the footprint.

I like my tent.

Summary:
Best tent I have ever owned. It is easy to set up, very comfortable for one even luxurious, extremely well made with great convenience features, huge/useful vestibule, and fairly light weight for a free standing tent of its size. My only comment is I wish it was a pound lighter & about a third smaller packed. I have had it on several backpacking trips over 3 years & it as performed flawlessly in all kinds of weather including heavy rain & wind wit no problems. It is a little high in price but worth every penny since its construction will cause it to last with reasonable treatment many years. If you have a first class pack, the weight will be no problem to carry (I have a Dana Alpine). I have the footprint for the tent which I recommend to protect the floor & to make taking down the tent in wet conditions very easy since the poles & fly can stay up keeping the tent body dry for your pack-ever pack a wet tent body? Also tried it with just the fly & poles for light weight packing in dry & relatively bug less weather-it is about 3 pounds lighter & half the volume ths way. If you are going to share it with another person-you may want the larger version.

Summary:
It's light and easy to put up, fairly versatile for the type of tent, I have even had it in bad weather without a problem. The problem is the bases are not durable enough, you have to carry an extra tarp layer for uner it, or you'll get condensation and maybe even water inside, other than that it;s typically great mountain hardwear gear

Summary:
I HAVE USED THIS TENT FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS, IN ALL WEATHER EXCEPT HEAVY SNOW, IT HAS HELD TOGETHER IN THE MOST EXTREME WIND DRIVEN RAIN I HAVE EXPERIENCED . THE ONLY NEGATIVE COMMENT I HAVE IS THERE IS NO FULL DOOR, ONLY A SCREEN, IN THE DESERT I HAVE HAD MY TENT FILL WITH THE FINEST SAND THAT THE NETTING WILL ALLOW THROUGH.
